Café’s Centrum Amsterdam – Hip

Agenda 17 Agenda 18 Agenda 19

Bep

Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 260 (626 56 49)
Bep attracts a crowd of young and hip creatives and media types, together with adjacent Diep and Seymour. Small scale pubcrawls between these bars seem to be the fashion. Bep is the more composed, mostly due to the well lit interior with light colors and of course the pebblestone wall. It isn’t very spacious and with the bar located in the middle of the floor it gets crowded during weekends. In summer everyone spills out onto the sidewalk. Bep offers inexpensive food until 10.30pm.
Open 11am-1pm (3am weekends)

Diep

Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 256 (420 20 20)
In stark contrast with Bep, Diep sports a camp brown interior complete with crystal chandeliers and disco lighting. Above the well stocked bar is a large illuminated news trailer which among other things announces the music that will be played by the turntablist, tucked away in a small booth. As with Bep, lots of young creative barhoppers.
Open 5pm-1am (3am weekends).

De Hoogte

Nieuwe Hoogstraat 2a (626 06 04)
Small popular bar on the edge of the Red Light district which caters to alternative locals and (young) tourists fleeing the busy Oude Hoogstraat. Cheap beers, good music and a relaxed atmosphere.
Open 10am-1am (3am weekends).

Huyschkaemer

Utrechtsestraat 137 (627 05 75)
Small split-level bar-restaurant with a modern interior, featuring an expansive tile mosaic behind the bar and furniture designed by the owner himself. Though this used to be a gay bar, nowadays the Huyschkamer caters to a mixed young and arty crowd. Small outdoor terrace during summer.
Open 4pm-1am (3am weekends)

Mono

Oudezijds Voorburgwal 2 (625 36 30)
This bar specializes in beer, tequila and breakfast. Normal breakfast like bacon and eggs, but also more radical stuff: coffee, cigarettes and aspirin or tomatoes cooked in tea. Accompanying punk, garage rock and sixties sounds.
Open Mon-Sun 10am-1am (2am weekends)

Het Schuim

Spuistraat 189 (638 93 57)
A large bar-restaurant in the renovated Spuistraat. Very popular with 25+ creatives and students. Comfortable chairs and sofa’s from which to enjoy the large selection of vodkas and coffees. Kitchen with standard bar-restaurant fare at modest prices with main dishes between €9-€13,50.
Open Mon-Sun 11am-1am (3am weekends). Kitchen 6pm-10pm

Seymour Likely Lounge

Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 250 (627 14 27)
To make sure you know what you’re getting into, it says ‘It’s a bar!’ on the window. In the early days this was necessary because Seymour was famous for its ultra-unconventional and ever changing interior, designed by artists collective Seymour Likely. Nowadays the redecoration frenzy has been put on hold, but it’s still worth a visit. As with Bep and Diep the Lounge caters to young and hip creatives, and gets packed after midnight.
Open 8pm-3am (4am weekends)

Sound Garden

Marnixstraat 164-166 (620 28 53)
Alternative bar was named after the Seattle band, but indeed has a very nice garden as well. Grunge and alternative sounds with a crowd to match. Lots of games: pool, darts, pinball, chess, backgammon to name a few. Attractive terrace in the back, overlooking the Singelgracht canal.
Open 1pm-1am (3am weekends)
